DAY 3 OF MY UK ADVENTURE

WOW! What fantastic weather. Yep. We’re in England and the temperature is like early May in Kentucky. Perfect.

Ken returned from morning meetings with a bag of “free stuff” from the exhibit hall. At a conference for fertility doctors, the exhibitors always have the coolest pens. This isn’t a pen but it is cool. A sperm-shaped vial filled with vodka.  The kohla bears fit on stethoscopes. I can probably find a way to attach one to my monitor as a reminder of this awesome trip.

First stop of the day was Selfridges. As a big fan of the show airing on PBS’ Masterpiece Classic, I had to stop by and check it out. We didn’t go inside because I would have spent hours there.

Next stop was Purdey, home to the world’s finest shotguns and rifles. The company is 199 years old. I talked to a sales person about what type of gun my characters would carry to America in 1840. If you’ve read The Ruby Brooch, I think Kit’s gun worked better during a stampede than anything Cullen would have brought across the pond with him. The store, however, was fascinating, almost a trip back in time.

On the way to the palace, we walked down The Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Walk. Beautiful!

TV news trucks were set up close to the palace. I don’t know if this is an everyday thing or if they want to be ready for the birth of a new royal. It would be exciting if the baby comes while we’re here.

Big Ben was impressive as was Westminister Abbey, although we missed the tour. From there we headed to Trafalgar Square then on to Regent Street and Oxford Street, the London version of NYC’s 5th Avenue.

Observations: the average age of people in the crowd seemed to be 20 or younger! There are no highrise buildings, history abounds, the city seems quieter than NYC, taxi drivers drive carefully, and I don’t think I saw an ambulance, firetruck, or police car speeding down the road.

Ken spent the afternoon tugging on my arm so I would keep up. It wasn’t that I was tried, there was just too much too see. Driving on the opposite side of the road and the British pound symbol on everything were the obvious signs that I wasn’t in the USA. From spending so much time in NYC, I’m used to hearing different languages while walking down the street, and seeing a few Bentleys and Rolls Royces, but not as many as I saw yesterday. Maybe I just don’t hang out in the part of NYC where those cars are likely to be found.

I know it’s for safety reasons, but I didn’t see a trashcan anywhere. Odd, the things one notices.

What do I think of London? I love it. I could live here and never get tired of the history. It’s an amazing city, and I’ve only seen a small portion of it. I’m looking forward to today’s adventure.
